November is almost over and here at the community newsroom the Greater Govanhill team have been working hard, putting together this year’s festive edition of the magazine. And this afternoon we will be out and about delivering the last of our Arts, Culture & Subcultures issue, so be sure to keep an eye out and grab one of the last copies before our festive issue hits the high street.
We can’t wait to share with you our new issue; which will showcase the festive events in the area, tips on how to stay warm and find support, how to embrace the changing seasons and much more! For now, here are some of the stories from around Govanhill and upcoming local events to keep you busy.

⚽Govanhill Baths Community Trust have announced new trial activities for their winter wellbeing programme that residents can try out. They will be trialling four new activities in December to gauge community interest; such as self-defence, dancing, football and drumming. For more information visit govanhillbaths.com.⚽
📸Street Level Photoworks have uploaded a virtual version of Simon Murphy’s GOVANHILL exhibition. Those of us who haven’t been able to access Simon Murphy’s exhibition can now explore a 3D model of it online. Simon’s exhibition will come to an end in January, so if you’d like to see his work but are short on time you can now enjoy the experience from home. Visit the page here.📸
⚒️M&S received approval for their plans to build a new food hall in Battlefield. Residents have been sharing a photo of an M&S sign sticking out of the Old Victoria building development, after planning permission was granted in October.⚒️
☕ A new coffee and loose tea shop has opened on Allison Street – just at a time when hot drinks are most needed! We haven’t been along to visit yet, but we will do soon. ☕

How Smart Works is Helping Unemployed Women Dress for Success
Smart Works has taken the UK by storm, with offices now in Glasgow. They aim to help women secure a job, through their clothing service, interview practices, CV workshops and are exclusively volunteer led. We met with a representative from Smart Works to find out more. Read More

Upcoming events…
📖TONIGHT: Exhibition on Honour Based Abuse: Perspectives From Lived Experience at the Glasgow Zine Library from 6pm. This event is a celebration of work created in partnership with The Survivor Arts Community and Karma Nirvana. The exhibition will run until the 30th of November.
🎄Govanhill Christmas lights switch on @ The Larkfield Community Centre on Tuesday, 28th, at 7pm. The annual Govanhill Christmas lights switch on will take place in the last week of November. There will be entertainment by Hollybrook Academy’s school choir, a pyrotechnic display by Midnight Storm and face painting for the wee ones.🎄
The Benefact Group launched a Good Movement Campaign this Christmas and community groups in Govanhill could win a £1000 grant. Groups like Thriving Places Govanhill are sharing the 12 days Campaign - where 12 charities could win £1000 if they are nominated.
