What's going on in Govanhill this week
Plus, find a page we have put together about Palestinian solidarity events and actions in the local area.
Hey folks,
It’s been a while since I have written the newsletter as I have been away for a month travelling around South India. I wish I could say that I spent the month looking around community media organisations in this part of the world (shoutout to Feminism in India who we have worked with before) much like Rhiannon did in North America — but instead my days were filled with sun, streetfood and sea swims.
It is good to be back though (albeit I’m still getting used to the cold) and amazing to see what the guys have been working on for the Christmas issue while I’ve been away. I’ve been thrown right back into the deep-end and editing what everyone has been working on in time for our print deadline at the end of the weekend.
But before you get your mittened-up paws on the new magazine, read on about all the latest goings-on in the neighbourhood, and find out about the new page we have created for local Palestine solidarity events.

🍻 The Laurieston has been in the news for a couple of reasons recently: firstly the family run pub has gone on the market after being owned by the Clancy family for the past forty years; second The Guardian reports that a new Royal Shakespeare Company production playing over the festive period has based it set on the Laurieston’s iconic bar table 🍻
🐦 Local birdwatchers have been spotting waxwings in Govanhill Park over the past week. The birds are mostly seen in Northern Scandinavia and Siberia but sometimes come to Scotland during the wintertime 🐦
📷 Lots of national outlets have been reporting on the Simon Murphy exhibition Govanhill currently on show at Street Level Photoworks, including this one from the BBC 📷
🥯 The Herald has given a lovely write-up on our new over the road neighbours Jeju Bakes. Be sure to go down and try some of their fresh produce. 🥯
🏠 The People’s Heath Trust have just announced they will be working with local housing, community & racial justice charities, delivering projects that respond to the growing problem of unfit private + social rented homes and their effects on tenants’ physical & mental health — including here in Govanhill 🏠
