We are Hiring a Trainee Journalist/Editor
We have an opportunity for an enthusiastic trainee journalist to join our small, but committed team. You’ll be working alongside our Editor and Editorial Assistant as well as freelancers, community reporters and volunteers. We’re looking for someone who values others' contributions and is willing to put in the time to really listen.
The job is designed as traineeship for someone who is starting out in local journalism, interested in developing their skills in reporting and editing, and who sees journalism as a long term career path. Training will be provided both in house and from external partners.
You’ll have a passion for constructive journalism, keen to get out into the neighbourhood to find and tell human-driven stories. You’ll cover underreported local issues to the highest standards of quality and accuracy.
We value quality over quantity. Rather than producing multiple stories a day, we’d rather you spent time on going into more depth on the stories you cover, to develop skills and knowledge.
Aside from journalism, you’ll be a member of a small values-driven team, with the freedom to shape your work, evolve your role, and contribute to our strategy. You will be able to learn, share, and be supported by team members who you’ll be collaborating with.
The successful applicant should have a curiosity about the world and ideas for what makes a good story. You should enjoy working in a varied environment across different projects. You will be producing stories for the website on a regular basis, as well as for our quarterly print magazine. We’re keen to help someone develop writing, editing and multimedia skills.
You will have an understanding of the local community and issues and barriers that might be faced by typically marginalised groups. At Greater Govanhill, we are committed to providing a platform to voices not typically heard in the media and this will be an integral part of this role.
