That's It for the Govanhill International Festival & Carnival 2023!
It was another packed year for ‘Scotland premium international festival’ as the streets pulsed with the sights, sounds and smells of this year’s festivities. Here are some of our highlights.
This year marked the seventh year of the Govanhill International Festival, the annual anti-racist festival that brings together the numerous local art scenes with the community activism. While the festival officially happens in the first two weeks of August, really, the groundwork of the festival happens many weeks and months before then. Event ideas start brewing in every community building in the spring, papier-mâché floats for the parade get doused in glue in June and, organisers start working on it months before then.
Here’s a round up of a few of our highlights and all the articles we wrote about for the festival.. what were your favourites? Tell us in the comments below.
Film: Glasgow Welcomes Refugees
In his documentary Glasgow Welcomes Refugees, South-American Filmmaker Jose Maria Martinelli shares the experiences of two Scottish activists, Jock Morris and Margaret Woods, who detail the history of the Glasgow Campaign to Welcome Refugees in the late 90s/early 00s.
An Interview with Poet, Harry Josephine Giles
For the festival author Harry Josephine Giles and councillor Elaine Gallagher hosted a in conversation event at Bees Knees. We caught up with Josie to chat about their 2013 residency at Govanhill Baths and latest work Deep Wheel Orcadia.
Govanhill…As I See It
The Govanhill…As I See it - photography Exhibition was a culmination of film photos of people, places and buildings that bring the people of Govanhill joy and capture the spirit of their neighbourhood.
We also hosted our own three events for the festival, these included a radio show, magazine making workshop for kids, and the reintroduction of our FONDS project (launching very soon!).
