Out with the new, and in with yet-to-be!
Plus: Join our Scots language writing group, hear from local writers at our launch event on Wednesday, opportunity for podcasting training provided by GambleAware, and get your party outfit ready!
Hello,
Mikael here writing to you on this cold November Friday… clutching onto a newsroom heater and chugging a lemsip. I hope you’re staying nice & warm this evening.
We’re still working away getting issue 20 out & about, which you can find in & around Govanhill already. However, as much as this is our biggest milestone as a community, we’re already looking to issue 21 and are inviting you to join our new Scots Language Writing Group kicking off later this month, where you can be part of the mag and have your work celebrated alongside nine other writers! More info below.
🎈 However, most excitingly, we are officially holding our birthday party on the 29th of November at the Community Newsroom from 6-9pm. The Southside Publishing Trail will also be taking part throughout the day, so we’ll also be taking part in that throughout the day. There will be drinks, snacks, good tunes, and some prizes up for grabs too!
Finally, we held a pop-up storybooth at Romanalav today and got some beautiful images of people from our community, who told us some wonderful stories as well. We can’t wait to share them with you!
That’s all from me this week, I hope to see you on Wednesday at our launch event, and/or at our birthday party in two weeks! Stay safe this week.
~ Mikael 💛
Govanhill: Wit Aboot Yae? (Scots Language Project Launch)
We are thrilled to announce that Greater Govanhill has been awarded vital funding from the Scots Language Publication Grant! This support will allow us to create a special 44-page magazine issue, titled Govanhill: Wit Aboot Yae?
This project is a massive opportunity to celebrate the everyday language of our community and challenge the stigma it often faces. We aim to validate the lived experience of all Glaswegians, no matter where you’re from, while also serving as a powerful tool for inclusion.
How? By remaining faithful to our multilingual mission! Selected Scots articles will be translated into community languages (like Urdu and Romanian) and vice versa, using the dialect as a friendly pathway to local culture for newer residents.
Get Involved: Join our new Scots Language Writing group! Up to 10 people, no matter your experience or knowledge of writing in Scots, will work with Greater Govanhill and some of Scotland’s leading Scots writers to create their own stories, articles, poems, and tales which will be featured in issue 21 of Greater Govanhill Magazine.
Launch Event on Wednesday 19th November
We’ll be kicking off with a launch event next Wednesday (November 19th) where we’ll here from local Scots writers Shane Johnstone (Govanhill Mythology, The Gods of Frequency) and Hayley Jane Dawson (Top Floor Tales, Does the Remembering Ever Stop?) who’ll be discussing their work, writing in Scots, and how to begin your writing journey.
If you would like to attend and have some questions you’d like to ask the writers, there are still some free tickets available for our launch event here.
Paid Podcasting Course: Share Your Story, Make Change

Participants will be paid £30 per week, food will be provided, and childcare support is available.
