Join the conversation on health inequalities
Plus, fireworks, back lanes, events and community awards - your latest news round up
Over the past year, Greater Govanhill community magazine and The Ferret investigative journalism cooperative have been collaborating on a project reporting on solutions to Scotland's health inequalities.
As the project comes to an end, we'd like to take the opportunity to bring together our readers along with researchers, funders, journalists, those with lived experience, and people working on the solutions - for a discussion around this topic.
We'll share some of the solutions we've been reporting on, and would like to hear about others we should be reporting on too - and how the media can do better in this area. Reserve your free space here.
To learn more about the project, we recommend listening to our three part podcast: The Ferret Investigates.. the health gap
What do you think of our latest issue?!
Have you got your copy of the new magazine? We have sent out the magazine to all our paying members and delivered the magazine to shops and community spaces in and around Govanhill. We’d love to know what you think of it - please share your thoughts in the comments below.
Reading this Substack but don’t get the magazine delivered to your house? We want to keep this magazine free for everyone, but if you can afford a few quid each month, that’s the best way to support us to becoming sustainable. Each magazine delivered also contains a little gift, this time it is a half price coffee voucher from Transylvania Cafe.
It was great to see Rahela from Romano Lav, our cover star for the issue, picking up her copy.
Our Weekly Round-up on the Neighbourhood’s Going-Ons
👩🌾 The Friend’s of Queens Park hosted a clean-up of the park’s wildlife pond. Volunteers got mucky to clear out litter and dig out reeds for the birds that use the space. 👩🌾
🪳 Local pest controllers say there has been a ‘jump’ in bed-bug cases in the past six months, particularly in the city-centre and Govanhill. This follows the news that there has been an outbreak of bed-bugs in the homes and public transport systems of Paris and London. 🪳
🗑️ There have been growing calls for electronic gates to be installed in back-lanes to curb against the rise of flytipping in the area. Union convenor Chris Mitchell says the situation has reached a “crisis point” and is a public health hazard for the residents and cleansing staff who are trying to empty bins in the area. 🗑️
Glasgow City Council have said they are receiving a high number of calls regarding fireworks this year, in particular around Govanhill Park. They have asked to share their fireworks protocol. Have you noticed this problem? Got an idea on what you’d like to be done about it? Let us know on newsroom@greatergovanhil.com
