Share your stories of local heritage
Get involved in our next issue all about local heritage, send us songs by local artists for our radio show, and join us for the next litter pick!
Last week, we officially celebrated the release of our latest issue, Issue 14 - Community Action - Out Now! — Greater Govanhill, but there’s no rest for the newsroom.
This week we are already turning our attention to the next mag – the heritage issue! And, as always, we want to hear from YOU. We want to hear all about the stories you would like to see in our next issue and we want to see your old photographs of Govanhill.
Any ideas or stories from back in the day are welcome. We want to celebrate our history and look at how the area has changed over the years. If you have stories you want to read, or ideas you want to contribute, please email newsroom@greatergovanhill.com.
In the meantime, find out how else you can get involved with us this month in this week’s newsletter….Including information on the next big Govanhill litterpick, which can be found at the bottom of the newsletter.☀️

Uncovering the fascinating stories of Govanhill
This week, we held the first two events of our heritage project – a talk on the origins of Govanhill and a walk around the neighbourhood to hear some of stories of these streets.
We looked at how Govanhill grew from a village to being subsumed into the Glasgow boundary – accepting in exchange for Govanhill Park. We saw the records from when there were just 13 inhabitants of Govanhill. We heard the story of the Glasgwegian heiress who caused a scandal when she ran off with the local skating instructor. And we heard about how local school boys went on strike in protest at too much homework.
The next part of this project will be an online story development session happening from 1-2pm on Wednesday 29 May via Zoom. Drop in for a chat about the stories you think are important to included and to find out how you can contribute to the next issue.
Tune in to our next show on Radio Buena Vida:
This Thursday from 2pm we will be live on Radio Buena Vida. Our show will feature some of the contributors from our latest issue in ‘Community Action’.
As the show coincides with the release of our new issue, we’d love to hear some of your favourite protest songs, or any song by Govanhill-based musician or band.
If you have any songs you would like to hear on the radio, please send them to devon@greatergovanhill.com by Wednesday 12pm.
